Kirthiga Reddy is the face behind facebook in India. She was the first employee hired by facebook in its India office. She held the post of Managing Director (MD) at Facebook India. She stepped down from the position of CEO Facebook India in June 2016 and moved to America to take on a global role at Facebook Headquarters in Menlo Park, California. She redefined Facebook’s mantra of staying connected with friends and family.
In just three years, Kirthiga Reddy moved from being a common user of facebook to building its operations in India!
In July 2010, Kirthiga, found her “dream job” when she joined Facebook as its first employee in India.
In 2011, Kirthiga Reddy was named in Fortune India’s Top 50 Most Powerful Women. She has also been named among India’s 25 Most Influential Women.
Kirthiga Reddy was born and brought up in India. She completed her bachelors in Computer Science and Engineering from MGM’S College of Engineering, Nanded, Maharashtra and stood second. After graduation, she moved to Nagpur along with her parents and then briefly worked helping Yashavant Kanetkar with the programming examples in his books to illustrate key concepts. She then went USA to pursue her MBA from Stanford University and M.S in computer engineering from Syracruse University. She has worked in several prestigious companies such as Motorola and Silicon Graphics – where she was the youngest director of engineering and the only woman at that level in her team.
At Facebook India office, Kirthiga Reddy had to start from scratch when she joined it in July 2010 as its first employee. She had to actually open the office shutters on day one. Under her leadership, Facebook India has managed to not only grow its user base but also made significant contribution to its global business through ad sales with major tie-ups like Coca Cola India and Yepme. Over the next 3 years, with Reddy’s hard work and determination Facebook witnessed a rapid growth in its user base in India. It also showed impressive brand and business engagements.
Free Basics scheme launched by Facebook in India wasn’t a success. So the company decided to take it back. A day after shutting down ‘Free Basics’ scheme in India, Kirthiga announced her decision to step down from her post and relocate to the United states in six to twelve months.
On February 12, 2016, posted on Facebook,
“When my family relocated to India, we knew that we would move back to the US some day. It’s a bittersweet moment to share that the return time frame is coming up in the next 6-12 months. Our two daughters start high school and middle school this coming year— which serves as a natural transition point to make this move back”
She is married to Mr. Dev and has two daughters – Ashna and Ariya. Ashna is starting 11th grade while Ariya is in 8th grade. Being a mother to two young girls, Reddy has struck a perfect balance in her work and family life. With her vast knowledge, good experience and the courage to take risks, Kirthiga Reddy is ready to face new challenges and earn more name and fame in days to come. All the best brave lady!
